Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into a bowl.
  3. Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Add the flour mixture in batches, alternating with the milk, mixing just until combined.
  6. Reserve ¾ cup of the batter and pour the remaining batter into the prepared pan.
  7. Mix the cocoa powder into the reserved batter until evenly combined.
  8. Drop spoonfuls of chocolate batter over the vanilla batter and gently swirl with a knife.
  9. Bake for 28 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool briefly, then invert onto a wire rack and let cool completely before slicing.
