Ingredients
- 3 cups cake flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup oil
- 4 large eggs (separated)
- 1 tbsp vanilla
- 1 tsp vinegar
- Red food coloring
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 16 oz cream cheese
- 3/4 cup butter (frosting)
- 5 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla (frosting)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line pans.
- Whisk flour, baking soda, cocoa, and salt.
- Beat butter, sugar, and oil until fluffy.
- Add yolks, vanilla, and vinegar.
- Alternate dry ingredients with buttermilk; add color.
- Whip egg whites to stiff peaks; fold in.
- Divide batter and bake 30–32 minutes.
- Cool cakes completely.
- Beat frosting ingredients until creamy.
- Assemble, frost, and chill before serving.

- For deep red color, use gel food coloring.
