Description
Soft, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies that are perfect for Christmas decorating or holiday gifting.
Ingredients
- 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups white sugar
- 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Gather all ingredients.
- Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together; set aside.
- Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl until smooth.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Stir in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
- Wrap dough and chill for 2 hours.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease baking sheets.
- Roll dough to ¼-inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Cut into desired Christmas shapes using cookie cutters.
- Bake for 6–8 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
- Cool on baking sheets briefly, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Decorate as desired and serve.
Notes
- To keep cookies soft, store in an airtight container with a slice of bread for up to 5 days.
- You can freeze baked cookies for up to 2 months.
- For a quick glaze, mix 1 cup powdered sugar with 2–3 tablespoons milk and a few drops of vanilla extract.
